Groom Hair and Beard Guide for the Big Day

When to get your wedding haircut, beard grooming tips and how to keep your style sharp all day.

A wedding haircut is all about timing. Too early and it's grown out; too late and it can look too freshly cut in photos.

Timing your cut

Get your final cut five to seven days before the wedding so it has time to settle. Have a test cut with the same barber about a month before — no dramatic changes close to the day.

Beards

  • Trim and shape your beard a few days before.
  • Use beard oil daily for a few weeks to soften the hair and skin underneath.
  • Tidy the neckline and cheek lines the day before or on the morning.

Clean shave

If you prefer to be clean-shaven, shave the evening before and touch up on the morning to reduce redness. Use a sharp blade and a soothing aftershave balm.

Styling products

Choose a product with a natural finish and medium hold. Bring it with you — or give it to the best man — for touch-ups after the ceremony.

When should a groom get a haircut before the wedding?

Around a week before, with a trial cut about a month earlier.
