Best Man and Groomsmen Duties: The Complete List
What the best man and ushers actually do — before, during and after the wedding.
The Wedding Party
The best man is the groom's right hand, and the ushers keep the day running smoothly. Here's what's involved.
The best man
Before the wedding
- Organise the stag do (and keep it within everyone's budget).
- Attend suit fittings and help coordinate the groomsmen.
- Prepare a speech — warm, funny and around five to seven minutes.

- Get the groom to the ceremony on time and looked after.
- Look after the rings until they're needed.
- Hand out supplier payments or tips if asked.
- Give the best man's speech and act as an informal host.
Ushers and groomsmen
- Greet guests and hand out orders of service.
- Show guests to their seats, with family at the front.
- Help with group photos by rounding people up.
- Look after elderly guests and direct people to the drinks reception.
How long should a best man's speech be?
Five to seven minutes is ideal — long enough for stories, short enough to keep everyone laughing.
