Wedding Guest Etiquette: RSVPs, Gifts and Seating

Modern UK wedding etiquette for couples — invitations, RSVPs, gift lists, seating plans and children.

Etiquette has relaxed, but a few thoughtful conventions make your guests feel welcome and your planning easier.

Invitations and RSVPs

Send save-the-dates six to twelve months ahead and invitations six to eight weeks before. Set the RSVP date four to six weeks before the wedding so you can confirm final numbers with suppliers.

Gift lists

It's perfectly acceptable to include a gift list or honeymoon fund. Keep the wording warm and simple, and share details on your wedding website rather than as a separate card.

Children

Whether you invite children is your decision. If you choose an adults-only wedding, say so clearly on the invitation and address it to the adults by name.

Seating plans

  • Seat guests with at least one person they know.
  • Keep elderly guests away from speakers and close to facilities.
  • Place children's tables near their parents.
  • Avoid seating anyone with a former partner if you can.

When should RSVPs be due?

Four to six weeks before the wedding gives you time to chase stragglers and confirm numbers.
