The Wedding Party

Choosing and Styling Your Bridesmaids

How many bridesmaids to have, how to ask them, styling mismatched dresses and keeping everyone happy.

Your bridesmaids are your support team, your hype squad and your emergency kit-carriers. Choosing and styling them should be a joy, not a source of stress.

How many bridesmaids?

There's no rule. Choose the people you'd want beside you on a stressful morning, and consider the size of your wedding — a large bridal party at an intimate wedding can feel unbalanced.

How to ask

A handwritten note, a small gift box or a relaxed lunch all work beautifully. Be clear about what you'll pay for and what you'd like them to cover, so no one feels awkward later.

Styling the bridal party

  • Matching dresses — classic and cohesive.
  • Same colour, different styles — flatters different body shapes.
  • Mismatched palette — three to four tones in the same family for a modern, relaxed look.
  • Separates and jumpsuits — comfortable and re-wearable.

Responsibilities

The maid or matron of honour usually helps plan the hen do, holds the bouquet during the ceremony, helps with the dress and keeps the bride calm. Share a short list of jobs so everyone knows their role on the day.

Who pays for bridesmaid dresses?

Traditionally the couple, but many bridesmaids contribute today. The key is to agree it openly at the start.
