The Ultimate Wedding Planning Checklist (Month by Month)
A calm, month-by-month UK wedding planning checklist — what to book, when to book it and what can wait.
Planning a wedding is really a long list of small decisions made in the right order. Get the order right and everything feels manageable. This checklist works for a 12–18 month engagement; if you have less time, compress the early stages and book the "one wedding a day" suppliers first.
12–18 months before
- Talk priorities with your partner: the three things you care about most, and three you don't.
- Set your wedding budget and decide who is contributing.
- Draft a guest list so you know your rough numbers before you view venues.
- Shortlist dates and seasons — Fridays, Sundays and winter dates are usually cheaper.
- View venues and book the one that fits your numbers, style and budget.
- Book your photographer as soon as the venue is confirmed.
9–12 months before
- Book your caterer (if the venue isn't in-house), band or DJ and officiant.
- Start dress shopping. Most made-to-order gowns take six to nine months.
- Ask your bridesmaids, best man and ushers.
- Consider wedding insurance.
6–9 months before
- Order your dress and book your hair and makeup artist.
- Book your florist and send save-the-dates.
- Plan and book the honeymoon.
- Choose bridesmaid outfits.
4–6 months before
- Order the cake and arrange suits or morning dress.
- Book transport, buy wedding rings and order invitations.
- In England and Wales, check when to give notice of marriage — you can do this up to 12 months ahead.
2–3 months before
- Send invitations six to eight weeks before the day.
- Have your hair trial and makeup trial.
- Choose shoes and accessories, finalise the menu and plan ceremony music.
The final month
- Final dress fitting, chase RSVPs and confirm numbers with suppliers.
- Write the seating plan and your on-the-day timeline.
- Pay balances, prepare tips in labelled envelopes and pack an emergency kit.
Frequently asked questions
What should I book first for a wedding?
Your venue, because it fixes your date, guest capacity and often your catering. Book the photographer straight after.
Can you plan a wedding in six months?
Yes. Be flexible on date, consider an off-peak day and book the venue, photographer and dress in the first few weeks.
