Long-Lasting Bridal Makeup: Tips From the Pros
How to get bridal makeup that looks natural, photographs well and lasts all day — plus booking your artist.
Bridal makeup has a tough job: it must survive tears, kisses, warm rooms and flash photography while still looking like you. Here's how to get it right.
Book the right artist
Look for an artist whose portfolio includes skin tones and styles similar to yours. Book six to twelve months ahead and confirm travel, timing and bridesmaid prices.
Have a makeup trial
A makeup trial two to three months before is essential. Bring inspiration photos, wear something similar in colour to your dress, and wear the look for a few hours to see how it lasts.
Tips for long wear
- Skin prep is everything — follow a consistent skincare routine in the months before.
- Use a primer suited to your skin type (hydrating for dry skin, mattifying for oily).
- Choose waterproof mascara and consider individual lashes, which feel lighter than strips.
- Set with a fine powder in the T-zone and use a setting spray.
- A long-wear lip with a matching liner holds through the meal.
Makeup for photographs
Very high-SPF and some mineral powders can cause flashback in flash photography. Your artist will know which products to avoid — mention if the wedding is outdoors or in the evening.
Should I do my own wedding makeup?
You can, but practise the full look several times and do a long-wear test day. Professional artists bring expertise, products and calm on the morning.
