Wedding Music Planning Guide: Ceremony to First Dance
How to plan wedding music for every moment — ceremony, drinks reception, first dance and evening party.
Music shapes the mood of every part of the day. Planning it moment by moment ensures nothing is left to chance.
Ceremony music
You'll need music for guests arriving, the processional, signing the register and the recessional. String quartets, harpists, acoustic singers and pianists are popular. Check your venue and officiant's rules — some civil ceremonies have restrictions on religious content.
Drinks reception
Light jazz, acoustic covers or a curated playlist keep the atmosphere relaxed while guests mingle.
The first dance
Pick a song that means something to you both. If you're nervous, ask your band or DJ to invite guests onto the floor halfway through. A few dance lessons can be fun if you want a choreographed routine.
Band or DJ?
- Bands bring energy and a live atmosphere; they need more space and power.
- DJs offer variety and flexibility at a lower cost.
- Many couples book a band with a DJ set between sets.
Practical checks
Ask about sound limiters, finish times, power supply, setup time and breaks.
When should I book wedding entertainment?
Nine to twelve months ahead — good bands and DJs book up quickly for summer weekends.
